Summary of
Activity:
Exhibition Standards in photojournalism, as in the other divisions, is a service with three customers: (1) Exhibitions, (2) Exhibitors, and (3) the Photographic Society of America.

The basic function is with exhibitions and circuits. An exhibition is a camera club competition on a world-wide basis. In a camera club competition "winning images" are selected and given an award. In exhibitions the "winning images" are called acceptances and the very best of the images are given awards. The acceptances are shown at least twice to public audiences before they are returned to the exhibitors. These shows are known as "exhibitions."

Camera Club competitions are conducted by a set of rules the club has established and each exhibition with PSA recognition is conducted by a set of rules that the Photographic Society of America has adopted. These rules are known as the "Consolidated Exhibition Standards." Because more is involved with a world-wide annual competition than a local club competition, the Consolidated Exhibition Standards are more complex and detailed than a typical club's competition rules, but they serve the same purpose.

Circuits are essentially a conventional exhibition except circuits link between three and six exhibitions together administratively. This reduces administrative work and costs.

The Exhibition Standards Director communicates with exhibitions and when they comply with the rules, they are given exhibition 'recognition.'   The recognition is announced in the PSA Journal's monthly Exhibition Listings and listed on this web page.  Communication with the exhibition chair is conducted to have their exhibition comply with PSA standards.

The second phase of the job is to communicate with exhibitors. This may be in the form of helping them to understand the nature of the exhibition process, to help resolve problems they have experienced, and other miscellaneous matters.

The third phase of the job deals with the continuing evolution of the Consolidated Exhibition Standards document. The development and approval of any changes starts at the division, works its way through the Exhibition Standards Committee (made up all Exhibition Standards Directors), and then to the PSA Executive Committee.
