Overview
Return to PJD Contents
Summary:
Photojournalism (PJ) is devoted to recording current events or situations to preserve them for the future.  News, features, man and man's environment, human interest . . . . . all are included.  The Photojournalism Division provides an opportunity for photographers to learn to capture events effectively (whether for family records, a private collection of historical happenings, or publication) and to share these images with fellow photographers.  Photojournalists contribute to the world's archives for future generations.

(IUTP) Award:

The International Understanding Through Photography (IUTP) Award was created to recognize an accomplished photographer whose publications, lecturing, and teaching have clearly contributed to the advancement of understanding among people.  The recipient need not be a member of PSA.  The awarding of the IUTP has been an activity of the Photojournalism Division (PJD) for many years.

The IUTP was established in 1957 and was originally sponsored by Nikon.  From 1975 to 1995 it was sponsored by the late Raymond A. Good, FPSA and Fern L. Good, APSA.  From 1996 to 2004 it was sponsored by an anonymous donor.  In 2004, the IUTP was transferred from a Photojournalism Division Award to a Society Recognition Award, thus making this most prestigious award for photojournalists even more significant as a Society award.  The IUTP award is presented during the membership meeting at the PSA Annual Conference each year.  The PJD will continue to assure the funding of the IUTP.
