The PJD Permanent Collection has been established to honor and preserve the finest photojournalism slides and prints. The oldest slide in the PJD Permanent Collection is "Kiss of Death" (1972) by William Edwin Booth, APSA, the first winner of the Photojournalist of the Year Award. The oldest print is "Finnish Evacuee" (1940) by Carl Mydans of LIFE Magazine (see below); and the next oldest print is "FDR Funeral, Warm Springs, GA" by Edward Clark also of LIFE Magazine. Viewing the Collection allows one to see the world change and see how photojournalism photography has changed. Styles and techniques of the contributing photographers have evolved over the years and during the last few years, the photography has become more sophisticated.
Those who qualify are invited to submit a slide, print, or electronic image to the Permanent Collection after having ten PSA-recognized Exhibition acceptances for that image (see Submission Form below). Award winning photos are occasionally requested for the Collection, regardless of whether they have ten acceptances or not. Winners of the Photojournalist of the Year Award (Smith Award) are invited to submit their photo to the collection as a Special Category.
Exhibitors who have reached the Five Star Rating, are invited to donate three of their images used to reach the five star rating. Exhibitiors who earn the Photojournalist I thru IV, are also invited to donate three images used to reach each of these levels.
The Collection is shown from time-to-time at photographic clubs, conferences, etc., and is not available for individual use.
