Junior Firefighters

IMAGE CAPTION - Recently the Royal Navy put on a day for West Wirral Scouts. One of the exercises involved scouts being dressed in firefighting gear and using & directing hoses. Their aim could be somewhat erratic and taking these photos involved a certain amount of risk of soaking!

TECHNICAL INFORMATION - Taken with Canon 400d, with 100-400 zoom lens, ISO 200, Speed 1000 at f8.

I think this has great story potential and is well composed and sharp throughout.  I think the story would be stronger if we could see them aiming at something or else see there more of their faces. Score 7

Glad you and your camera didn’t get too wet. This looks like great fun for them. This is a really good PJ shot. I wish we can see what they are aiming the hoses toward. Since we don’t see a fire anywhere, I think I would crop a little off the right side. It tells a pretty good story regardless. 7

Vivid color and very sharp. I would crop off the right end just past the Kayaks to eliminate the distractions. Certainly tells the story well. Very Nice Shot. Score 9.
Alex Lane Very good subject! This is a good 'action' type shot with good composition, color & sharpness. The only improvement I would suggest is to take the shot looking AT the firemen instead of away from them. Why, because, as it is, you only see them shooting water at the driveway! Looking AT them you would still have the action but not know it was a 'trial' run shooting at nothing. It would add more mystique. Alex (9)
Subhash Sapru I like this image, but I would have cropped it from the pole to the right to avoid distractions. Or, I would have made this image from a different angle to enable the viewer see where the water is being thrown.-7

Brian Magor - Biography
Retired in 2003 after 39 years teaching history and as a Deputy Headmaster in a Boys Grammar School. Had cameras in my youth, but have not really taken any pictures since the 70s - except to be told occasionally to take "holiday snaps" while my wife, who has been a photographer since childhood, took the serious photographs. Upon retirement took up photography - this time digital - working my way up from a pocket 1.2 megapixel camera, which I lost skiing somewhere in Finland, to a digital SLR - Canon 350D then a 400D. We share a Canon 100-400 USM Zoom lens.

Joined Hoylake Photographic Society in the UK - now a club member of the PSA entering our first inter-club competitions this year. Started entering international competitions in 2007 & was amazed to find myself in the 2007 PSA Who's Who! We joined the PSA in 2009 and set ourselves a target to get 10 stars in our first year - nearly there! Don't always know what I am doing, but get good advice from my wife.  Didn’t think we took Photo-Journalism pictures until we went to the PSA Conference in Yellowstone & saw some of the images that had been accepted in the PJ competition – so we thought we’d give it a try!
