Swift Water
Rescue
IMAGE CAPTION -
While boating the Sandy River
in northern Oregon this past weekend, my husband saw this woman on the other
side of the bank while scouting a rapid. He called 911 and had a rescue
initiated. Apparently, she flipped her kayak and swam to shore. We negotiated
the class 3+ rapid and watched the rescue in progress. I took a few photos,
which was challenging from a moving boat. The firefighters involved in the
rescue were from the Sandy Fire Department, Sandy, OR. The rivers here have
claimed quite a few lives this year so far. The water is extremely cold and
fast, with lots of debris. I hear of a drowning about once a week or so in the
last 4 weeks.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION -
Canon Powershot S3IS, hand
held. Focal length 72mm, f3.5, 1/125, auto exposure. I have having trouble
with the exposure as the sun was in my eyes. I held a hat over the camera but
it was not enough. The camera suggested using a flash but it was too far away
to do any good.

I remember driving thru Sandy on our way to our condo on our
ski trip. Its too bad you did not have a longer lens. I would crop out
the white water on the bottom of the image. Score 8. |

You have a photojournalist's knack for taking pictures in a
crisis. Well done. Good expression on the rescuer's face. It looks like you
couldn't use a longer zoom than 72mm with sufficient shutter speed at the
scene. Still, cropping the photo in your image editing software would add
emphasis, and give you a Salon winner (9 or 10). 7-8 |

River kayaking is a dangerous sport as you can see. I am glad
to read that everything worked out well and that the women kayaker was able
to swim to shore safely. To make this picture more dramatic, zoom in to see
more of the details in the PJ photo. Nice color and exposure. Score - 7 |

Excellent PJ Shot. You certainly captured the drama very
well. I would crop off the white bottom. Score 9. |

This is surely a dramatic type Image with all of the right
ingredients! The color and composition is good for the circumstances. I
would have preferred a higher view. This image was taken at about the same
level as the “action” which does not allow you to see much of the ‘rescued’
and not much more of the ‘rescuer’! (9) |

Birgit Langmann -
Biography
Hi, my name is Birgit Langmann. I have been taking pictures during most of
my life. It started with family vacations and a photography day camp in my
pre-teens. I did not really take it seriously until I started fighting wild
land fires after college where I never went anywhere without a camera. I
also did a some Search and Rescue as a climbing ranger and would photograph
events and trainings. Then I got married and life as I knew it stopped with
the arrival of my eldest daughter Jasmine, now 6 and in first grade. Her
sister, Sophia, 3, is in preschool.
Every year or so, we do a family adventure but not this year. This year's
adventure has been buying a new house after relocating to
Portland
Oregon after living in
Colorado for about 10 years. Now I am in
the process of renovating the house while my husband works so we can pay
for my renovations (I do the work).
As most photographers, I have had a really hard time finding a photo of
myself. I have lots of my girls and my husband so this is the only one I could
find from this year. Sad but true.
